The #TeamJamaica hashtag has taken oven Twitter these past few days and even Facebook is getting in on it.

We’ve always been a nation of proud people but rarely has it ever been on showcase in this fashion. Even more, a quick search of this hashtag will show you that Jamaicans aren’t the only persons using it. The support of our Jamaican athletes at the London 2012 Olympics is a sight to behold.

No time has the phrase ‘likkle but wi tallawah’ been more evident.

But will we make use of this while it’s still a hot topic? We know how the pattern of focus and attention is for social media. As soon as the Olympics and Jamaica50 celebrations are over, or even before that, persons will have already moved on to something else. If we are going to capitalize on this opportunity, we have to do it right now.

How will we do this? It’s pretty simple to ride on the coattails of a prominent theme. Piggybacking is an acceptable way to get attention, as long as you don’t make any false claims or accusations, no one will mind. As a matter of fact, you are helping to bring more attention to the topic at hand and the brand(s) being promoted, the Olympics and Jamaica 50 in the case, will only benefit from your promotion. Mutual advantage. Symbiosis. Win-win.

The best approach to take here is to have a promotion, competition or giveaway tying your brand with brand Jamaica. Both these elements must be included in order for this to be executed properly. You without brand Jamaica will be just like any ordinary competition and brand Jamaica without you will not only be obviously a desperate attempt for any kind of attention but it will also be pointless in  achieving what should be your ultimate goal of brand awareness.

A key points to keep in mind: you should always be transparent with your audience and let them know that you are not affiliated with Jamaica 50 or the Olympics in any way, especially if your prizes include officially certified Jamaica 50 memorabilia (find the list of those here).

Everything else is open to imagination. Cook up the best promotion you can for your brand and get crackin’!

As for us, we’ll be here cheering on #TeamJamaica throughout the rest of Jamaica 50 celebrations, Olympics and beyond.
